A little Ballard History
The area that is now Ballard was first platted in 1889 by Daniel Bagley, Thomas Burke, and John Leary and was named for Captain William Rankin Ballard, a settler who arrived in the area in 1887.
The arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the 1890s spurred the development of Ballard, which became an incorporated city in 1890.[4] The new city’s economy was based on fishing, shingle mills, and shipbuilding and was aided by the arrival of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway in 1892.
Throughout the 20th century, Ballard was largely a working-class area that served the larger city of Seattle. Many of the area’s plumbing businesses were established in the early 1900s and have been passed down through generations of owners. As Seattle’s population has grown, Ballard has become increasingly popular with young professionals, leading to a revitalization of the area.
